Sixty-five percent of women have natural curls and waves and do not know how to take care of them. Women fight them, hide them, tie them back, and blow them out. Curltopia wants you to embrace your curls! Free them, brag about them, and flaunt the attitude that comes with them! The Deva Cut is a hair cutting technique created by Lorraine Massey, the author of “Curly Girl” and co-owner of Devachan Salon, in New York City. With this technique, each curl is cut individually and normally at an angle so as to not disrupt the curl pattern. From slightly wavy to corkscrew curls, the cut will encourage, enhance, and control your curls allowing you to enjoy every luscious twirling lock of the curls you love so much.
Curltopia’s thoroughly trained staff of Deva architects and hydration specialists offer a range of services that nurtures your senses and spirit as well as your hair. Our expert staff will train you in the fundamentals of daily hair care and styling, encouraging and supporting you to embrace and enjoy the authentic quality of your natural hair every day. Two of the many trademarks for which the experts at Curltopia are trained in, is the highly-acclaimed Deva cutting technique. The visual impact of these artistic expressions is a three-dimensional work of art.
What exactly is the Deva Cut?
The Deva cutting technique is a revolutionary method for cutting curly hair whereas most traditional hair cutting techniques were created for straight hair. The advantage of Deva Cuts is that it’s customized to work with your unique curl pattern. This curl exclusive cut requires special training to learn the technique. The hair is cut dry, simply because we wear our hair dry not wet. Curly hair and its spring factor can be misinterpreted while wet- that’s why we cut the hair in its natural form, while dry, curl by curl. This unique innovation allows the stylist to sculpt each client’s hair, according to their individual curl, look, and style because no two curls are alike.
Can I get a Deva Cut?
If you have waves or curls, you need a Deva cut! And remember, frizz is just a curl waiting to happen! To see the 4 different curl types defined by Deva and for more information on your curls you can visit www.mydevacurl.com
Do I need to do anything to my hair to prepare for a Deva cut?
Yes! If you have an appointment for a Devacut, we need you to come in “Deva ready.” Your stylist will need to see your curls:
- detangled,
- defined,
- and falling naturally.
The Devacut is best on fresh, dry curls so here’s the deal: the morning of your appointment we need you to wash, detangle, and style your hair with product so that your curls are defined when you come in for your appointment. If you have kinkier curls (natural hair), we need you to come in with a “wash n’ go” (finger-style) so that your stylist can accurately assess your shrinkage.
Do not pull your curls up in a ponytail, braid, bun, clips, or wear a hat when you come in for your appointment. Your stylist needs to see your curls detangled, defined and calling naturally.
What is the difference between the Deva certifications?
There are two different Deva certifications based off of which training class the stylist attended.
A Certified Deva Inspired Stylist has successfully completed the DevaCurl Academy’s 2-Day Cutting Curl Lab known as Curlaboration. Newly trained stylists leave the DevaCurl Academy having perfected the patented Deva Cut.The stylist’s instruction includes theory-based education and hands-on technical work with volunteer curly models and mannequins.
A Certified Deva Inspired Advanced Stylists has successfully completed the DevaCurl Academy’s Intense 3-Day Cutting Curl Lab held in NYC at the prestigious Devachan Salon. The class is instructed hands on by the most elite Deva professionals giving the stylist a more intimate and indepth education on perfecting the patented Deva Cut.
Why would a Deva Stylist have multiple certifications?
Like all techniques and skills in any profession ‘perfect’ will never be definite perfection. The patented Deva Cut is forever evolving. Only the upmost dedicated Deva stylists continuously attend the DevaCurl Academy burning with the passion and desire to remain on top of the latest developments in the world of Devacurl including: optimal use of new products, updated tricks and tips on curly hair, the latest trends and styles for curly hair, etc.
